Nicole Turner (Paralympic Games 2016)
Laois Marlins swimmer Nicole Turner received confirmation on the Ireland team on July 5th having already qualified for 6 events the year prior when making her senior team debut at the Para World Swimming Championships in Glasgow.
The Team of 48 Irish Athletes of which Nicole was the youngest member of the team departed for Brazil on the 23rd August to a holding camp in Uberlandia until the 3rd of September when the team headed to the athletes village in Rio 4 days before the opening ceremony.
Nicole not only was the youngest member of the Irish team but also had the busiest schedule being selected to compete in 6 events. Nicole competed within 48 hours of the opening ceremony and therefore, was not permitted to attend.
9th September – Event 1 50m Butter fly
One of Nicole’s strongest events, finishing 2nd in her heat with a time of 38.44secs and making the final. Nicole swam a great final securing a lifetime best time of 37.31secs and 5th place, just outside the medal positions by 5 tenths of a second.
10th September-Event 2 50m freestyle
In heat 1 Nicole again swam to secure a place in the final finishing just outside her personal best with a time of 36.70secs. In the final Nicole secured yet another lifetime best swim finishing in 7th place overall, in a time of 36.31secs.
12th September-Event 3 200m Individual Medley
In the second heat Nicole finished 4th just outside of her personal best with a time of 3.17.09secs. This remarkably qualified her, for her 3rd final in the games. In the final Nicole was unable to improve on this time yet still performed well to finish 7th in a time of 3.18.18.
13th September- Event 4 400m freestyle
In heat 1, Nicole finished 4th with a new personal best time of 5.51.99. In the final she finished 8th with a lifetime best swim of 5.54.61.
15th September – Event 5 100m breast stroke
This would turn out to be Nicole’s final event because she was to be withdrawn from the 100m freestyle due to medical reasons. In the heat she swam near her personal best time and achieved a clean sweep of 5 finals from 5 events. In the final of the 100m breast stroke, she came 7th and made a lifetime best of 1.46.19
One of the many highlights for Nicole was being asked to be the flag bearer in the closing ceremony in front of the sell out crowd in the Maracana Stadium.
