The Laois Marlins Swim Club Christmas Fun Gala caused Waves of Excitement on Saturday the 1st December! This is The Laois Marlins Annual Winter Gala and it is a firm favourite with many of the neighbouring Swim Clubs, as it is aimed at those younger swimmers just starting off their Gala Experience or those trying to improve on previous swim times.
This year, however, was the busiest year so far, with a total of 9 Swimming Clubs from throughout Ireland entered, with over 250 swimmers taking part in well over 700 individual swims! With that amount of swims, it had to be run like clockwork and with that said, the Gala started and finished on time!
There were medals for the Top Three finishers in each race, along with spot prizes such as the Seasonal favourite, A Cadbury Selection Box, being one of the most coveted prizes of the day!
It was nice to see some fantastic competition in such young swimmers with no individual clubs making off with all the medals, there was a good even distribution. Plus as this was a fun gala and open to swimmers of age 7 to 14 years it attracted all those younger children that were looking for a chance to compete in a gala for the first time.
Our own club Laois Marlins was very well represented with over 50 swimmers from the club taking part, and our older swimmers helping out with time keeping and Gala organisation.
With that level of entry Laois Marlins Swim Club took home a healthy haul of medals, 60 medals in total; comprising 18 Gold, 21 Silver and 21 Bronze. A special mention must be made for those first time swimmers, for the Girls; Freya Stanley, Kara Phelan, Aine O’Sullivan, Chole Kavanagh, Faye Kelly, Faith Levine Donoher, Eleanor Bickerdike, Rachel Igoe and Ellie Hudson. First Time Swimmers for the boys were Michael Bergin, Calvin Carbio, Charlie Herrernan, Matthew O’Sullivan and Aidan Zou.
Many thanks to all the other Clubs and Swimmers who took part in the Gala; Piaranas Swim Club, Nenagh Neptunes Swim Club, Athlone Swim Club, Tullamore Swim Club, St Fiacc’s Swim Club, Drogheda Swim Club, Viking Swim Club and Kilkenny Swim Club. Looking forward to seeing you all again in the spring!
